Important Information

YOU MUST APPEAR IN PERSON IN FRONT OF THE CALIFORNIA NOTARY PUBLIC

A current ID card or Driver License from any US state, a Passport, Matrícula Consular de México, or Canadian Driver License would be the most convenient form of ID to bring to a notarization.

It is HIGHLY PREFERABLE that documents are presented UNSIGNED.

Documents and are REQUIRED to be UNSIGNED if a JURAT is to be executed.

A California Notary Public must use the California wording of certificates on all notarized documents, which is in English. If your document has notarial certificate wording from another state, the notary will cross it off and provide a loose leaf certificate with the California wording, which will then be adhered to your document

Because the Notary's job is only to verify the identity and/or signature of a person, it is LEGAL for a California Notary Public to notarize a document written in a foreign language, even if the notary does not understand the language; but if the notary has reasonable suspicion that this document is not complete-- for example if there are blank or missing pages, or blank spaces-- the document cannot be notarized.

For a deposition or oath/affirmation, the notary and the deponent and/or oath/affirmation taker must be able to fluently understand each other, as the use of interpreters is forbidden by California law; this is for the safety of the member of the public and the notary public.

Though notarization of immigration documents is legal, the notary is forbidden from filling in information on these forms, according to California law.
